Social Media Marketing: Twitter and Blogs and LinkedIn…Oh, My!

It’s no secret that social media marketing is becoming more and more important to businesses online and offline. There is, however, still a bit of mystery regarding how to really use social media well and what it takes to reach a social media marketing plan’s potential.

The current top four social media tools are Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn and Facebook. With so much activity and press given to these sites, it seems that many marketers are still asking: What are the best tactics to use? How do we measure the effectiveness of these social media platforms? And, where do we start?

This seems to indicate that there are a lot of businesses that are just getting their feet wet in the social media pond even though some of the channels have been around for several years. While some businesses got in early and have been reaping the benefits of the interaction with customers that social media provides, the vast majority of large and small businesses have just gotten started with social media marketing in the last several months.

What does this mean? Well, with so many business owners just getting started, it means that the field is wide open to those willing to learn how to implement a social media marketing plan and then follow that plan with patience and tenacity. Social media is a time consuming effort and requires consistency, so while it is cost effective for many businesses, it is the time and effort put in that will really see results.

The good thing is, it is not necessary to only use the top four social media platforms or the most popular sites. Research where your target market is hanging out online and then concentrate your efforts there. Social media marketing is really about joining the conversation that your customers are having, so find out where they are and get into the dialog now.
