There are certain types of navigation that can keep the search engines from getting to the important information they need. The architecture of hyperlinks is what the search engine spiders actually use to crawl the web. They need these hyperlinks in order to find new pages and to see changes made to existing pages and documents. Without knowing it, you may be setting up your pages with complex links and deep structure to the site with little unique content, and when this happens you effectively are putting up walls that make it difficult for the spiders to move about freely and gather the information to do a good job of indexing what they find.

· An example of issues that you may be creating are complex URLs with 2 or more dynamic parameters, such as: http://www.yoursite.com/index.html?id=4bplDC&mo8%enuff%=Jnk These types of links can be scary for the spiders because they can return errors for the bots.

· Pages with 100 or more unique links that point to other pages on the site and pages that are placed deep in the site. Deep pages are those that are more than 3 levels (or links) away from the home page of the website.

· Other hindrances are: pages that require a Cookie to enable navigation (otherwise known as “Session IDs”) and pages that are split into frames.

· Also stay away from pages that you can get to only from a specific form and/or using a submit button, pages that can only be accessed via a drop down menu link, and pages only accessible from a search box or requiring a login.

· If you have pages or documents that are purposefully blocked using a robots meta tag or something similar then the spiders will not do their job and pages that use a re-direct before the end content is reached (also referred to as cloaking). Of course, cloaking may get you banned, period, so it’s not suggested.

In order to avoid all of these walls and issues that can keep your site from getting the search engine love that it deserves, you need to make sure you are providing direct HTML links that point to each page that you’d like the search engine spiders to index. Keep in mind that its best if the pages are accessible from the home page as this is where most spiders start their crawl. Otherwise, your pages are not likely to be seen if they are not linked to from the front page. A great way to make sure that the spiders see everything is to have a sitemap. Sitemaps are great for both human visitors and the search engines.

To begin, the search engines use automated programs, called “Spiders” or “Bots.” These programs use the hyperlink structure of the internet to crawl the pages and other documents that make up all that we see (and don’t see) on the Internet.

When a page has been crawled, then the contents are “Indexed” and stored in huge databases. The index needs to be watched closely and managed in an extraordinary way so that when a search is conducted, the billions of documents are sorted and the right information pops up.

As a request or search comes in, the engine pulls from the index all of the document that matches the search request. A basic request will pull information for the word, words, and phrase input by the user. Meaning that the individual words are searched first, then the loose phrase. Only if the user inputs the words or phrase in quotation marks will the engine pull the exact phrase with the words in order for display in the results. The search engines perform this function hundreds of millions of times each day.

But wait, how do the results show up in the order they do on the results page? Well, when the search engine is done with the particular search and has determined which sites and pages are a match, the algorithm (or mathematical equation that is commonly used for sorting) performs a calculation on each of the matching results and determines which is most relevant. These results are then sorted on the page in order of most relevant to least relevant and displayed for the user to see. From here, it is up to the user to decide and choose which one most closely matches what they were looking for.

While this process is not really a long one and can return a result from the search engines almost instantly, these systems, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo! really are the most complex and process-intensive computers in the world. They manage the calculations (millions of them) within seconds and then process the results, sending them out to the users in an extremely quick and effective way.

With video being so hot right now, here is an app that is very timely. Tweetz.tv allows you to see YouTube videos that are mentioned on Twitter. My TV, Public TV and Search TV are the three channels that it shows on. With My TV, you can see the videos that are posted by people you follow, the Public TV channel shows all videos that are posted within the public timeline and Search TV allows you to look for specific topics that have been mentioned.

Tweet Hopper is another app that allows you to manage multiple accounts if you need to. Part of what makes it unique is that it has a functionality that allows multiple people to tweet to one account. Tweet Hopper also auto-follows those that follow you and can tweet RSS feeds, which can really come in handy.

Depending on how large your messages may be, TweetYourMail.com could really make your life easier. You are able to share email messages with Twitter followers by sending your email to tweet@tweetyourmail.com and then the message is tweeted. It is then posted on a web page that is hosted by tweetyourmail.com so that your followers can see the entire message.

Last but not least is Bccth.is, which is a free Twitter client that you can send private messages on. You can private message the followers as blind carbon copies to ensure that the tweet is seen, then the conversation can be continued in private. This service automatically shortens the URL’s, stores the messages, (both sent and received) and shows the number of participants and comments in the conversation.

To make the most of your social media marketing efforts, it’s best to find apps and tools that can maximize your efforts and keep you organized. While content may be king, there are other features of your web pages that need to be addressed in order to keep the search engine spiders happy as they search for their digital food. A couple of Internet marketing/SEO page aspects that are easy to address are: loading speed and images.

Do you know how fast (or not) your pages are loading for your visitors? This is an aspect of your overall site that is very important for internet marketing reasons as well as SEO. First, if visitors have to wait too long to even view you pages, then it is highly likely that they will back out or move on to the next site. Second, fast loading pages are more likely to be crawled and indexed by the search engine spiders.

The good news is that Google has added “Site Performance” to its Webmaster Tools section and this allows you to see your page load times and compare this to the average page load times for other pages across the internet. Take a look at this section in the Webmaster Tools of Google analytics or do a search for other web page speed optimizer tools so that you can get a handle on your page load times.

Another quick fix is optimizing your images for SEO. This is related to the page loading that we just mentioned as it is often the images that can slow down the loading time. It is important in Internet marketing to have some color images to break up your website, but it is advisable to be careful about how many and what kind of images are placed on a site.

The two most common types of images are JPEG and GIF images. Photos are usually JPEG and graphics are usually GIF. With PhotoShop, it is fairly easy to edit images and graphics and adjust the file size. You can also adjust the number of colors used in the image, but be sure that you don’t go so far as to affect the image quality. If the image is small enough, but blurry, you will not have really gained anything, so you are looking for a balance between a clear image and a small enough file.

There are many components that can affect your Internet marketing efforts, and it can take awhile to get the hang of SEO, but it really is worth it in the end. Once you have a feel for on page components, it does get easier.
