I recently read an article at EWI that warned aspiring home business owners to watch out for deceptive offers that could cause you to lose a lot of money. With the shaky economy, massive layoffs and companies shutting down many are looking for ways to fortify their financial standing. Some are too scared to do anything while others are bravely venturing out to start a home based business. The sad thing is that many will find misleading opportunities instead of genuine businesses. While the Internet has made all of our lives so much easier there are also people out there that wait to prey on unsuspecting victims with high hopes of  making money in a business of their own.

The law states that they must state in the same ad as these claims what percentage of purchasers are actually making the money they are claiming.

Talk To People

One of the best ways to truly find out if a business opportunity is real is to talk to others who have purchased the
opportunity. If you can talk to them person to person it’s even better. Many of the references given in advertisements about business opportunities are not real. People get so hopeful and want to have their own business so much that they rush and don’t take time to really check all the details out. Getting the real story from real people who have had experience with the company you are considering could save you heartbreak and money.

My Poor Mom

I was infuriated a few months back when my own sweet mom, who is almost eighty years old, was mislead by an Internet “business opportunity”. My mom lost thousands of dollars, she maxed out her credit cards and signed contracts that commit her to pay monthly for the next two years. I am still looking into that mess to see if there is anything that can be done. I asked her how the whole thing started. She said that looking back she did feel that they were talking fast and pressuring her to “Decide NOW”

Seniors and Children

The Enlightened Wealth Institute says that the most vulnerable to fast talking sales people are the Seniors. The deceptive sales people can hear when they have a senior on the phone and zero in for the big bucks. I feel so sad for my mom; she is still so embarrassed. She says she feels like she is stupid now. Children are equally at risk on the Internet because of dangerous predators lying in wait for the innocent. Parents need to do their best to guide their childrens web time.
